Spread the Word - Special Education PTSA

This is a busy time of year for all of us, and I have a huge favor to ask.  The LISD Special Ed PTSA is a district-wide PTA that serves families who have children using special ed services, as well as educators and the community.  Can you please help us get the word out to your special ed families at your school?  Here’s what you can EASILY do:

 (1)   Have our membership application available at your school – at open house night and whatever other venues you have available

a.   The application is here, along with a 1-page brochure telling about our PTSA that can be photocopied on the reverse side of the application.

    (2)   Print news from the Sp Ed PTSA in your school newsletter – please send your newsletter editor’s contact info to amy@texasturners.net so that we may send them monthly news updates.

  (3)   Find and appoint someone at your campus who has a heart for Special Ed to be a Liaison between your school and the Sp Ed PTSA.  Liaisons just help us get information out, it’s an easy job.  Current LISD campus liaisons.

If your school isn’t on this list, we’d love your help in finding a Liaison.  We’d also really love to have a Liaison from Dale Jackson Career Center and Lewisville Learning Center!

Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions or could use additional materials.  We are here to help you!

Ongoing Projects

Dressed to Learn is a partnership between the Lewisville Council of PTAs and Communities in Schools of North Texas (CISNT), a non-profit organization whose mission is … coordinating and providing community based solutions that challenge young people to overcome barriers, succeed in school and prepare for life. It is intended to combine the resources of both the Lewisville Council of PTAs and the individual local PTA units in order to supply new clothing to children in need as identified by counselors, nurses, teachers, or administrators of schools within LISD. As a result of a previous, ongoing relationship with LISD, CISNT currently has Campus Managers on a number of LISD campuses, and through them, clothing is available to any LISD student in need through the Dressed to Learn Program.

Goals for the 2005-06 school year included building continued awareness of the program at the local units and encouraging PTAs to have New Clothing Drives. Drives can be scheduled at any time throughout the year. We encourage drives for uniform type clothing (khaki pants/shorts and white collared golf type shirts with no logos) as that is the greatest need at this time and can be worn by any student in need of school appropriate clothes regardless of the uniform policy in their school. (Except for the “Gently Used” coat drive, this program is for new clothing only.)

Please determine if there is a place to support the Dressed to Learn Program to benefit children in need in LISD as your PTA begins developing programs for the year. Additionally, if supported by your PTA, monetary donations can be made to this program though the Council.

For more information or to schedule a drive, please contact Jan Picardi at (972) 539-7643.
