A
Message From Your Council President |
|
Welcome back to another school
year! I hope you enjoyed a longer summer and are well
rested for the exciting PTA activities ahead. By now,
your PTA has been in full swing planning
back-to-school activities, recruiting members and
volunteers and holding your first board and regular
meetings.
Your council has also been busy
preparing for the upcoming Leader Orientation
Trainings, Officer & Chairman Training (see separate
articles for more details) and new ways to communicate
information to empower you for your duties. The
Lewisville ISD Council is here to serve and support
your PTA. An eager and talented group of men/women
are ready to help as you can tell by all the
newsletter articles provided this month. Take
advantage of all these tips!
We encourage you to utilize us
as a resource along with the many other resources
available through National PTA
www.pta.org and Texas PTA
www.txpta.org.
Please consult the Texas PTA
Handbook and your PTA bylaws and standing rules
when a question arises. You will most likely find the
answer. Just let your fingers do the walking! Don't
hesitate to contact the council board if you still
need clarification, have further questions or would
like additional training. Contact information for
board members is at
www.lisdpta.org.
We look forward to building a
relationship with your PTA this year and expect great
things from each of our 63 local units! You can help
get things started by forwarding this newsletter to
ALL your board members.

A Message from the Superintendent
Dear PTA Members,
I
want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone
back to another school year. Whether you are a
PTA veteran or a first time PTA Volunteer, I hope
you are as excited about this upcoming year as I
am. We had a great year last year, and our
administrative team has been planning all summer
for increased improvements in student learning and
the overall successes that took place last year.
One of the most influential factors on student
success is the support and involvement of
parents. As PTA members you have already taken an
important step in that involvement. Our district
could not operate at our high level of achievement
without the support of the PTA.
As a result of that continued support the
Secondary School Task Force last year embraced our
future growth at the High School level. The task
force recommended and the School Board accepted
the proposal to build 9th grade centers
as necessary for each high school, implement an
Academy program, increase the use of technology,
build a career campus (like Dale Jackson) on the
east side of the district, offer more dual credit
opportunities, develop internship programs through
the Academies, and increase the rigor of our
academic programs.
The board and I will be working out all the
details about a bond proposal and will be asking
for your support in passing a bond election in the
spring. This proposal should be a Win-Win
situation especially for all of our high school
students.
Thank you for all you do for our students and
teachers.
Have a great year,
Dr. Jerry Roy

September Council Speaker |
|
It
is hard to believe that school is back in full swing!
Although our summer break was longer, it seemed to
just fly by! Hopefully, everyone is quickly adjusting
to all the new routines of this school year. To help
us kick off another great year, the Lewisville Council
is pleased to have Dr. Jerry Roy, Superintendent
for LISD, as our featured guest speaker at the
September 12th Regular meeting. He
will be presenting a "State of the District" address
updating us on all things new and great in LISD!
In October, Jennifer Waters, affiliated with Real
Options for Women, will present parenting tips and an
overview of the 180 Degrees program, which is a
free-of-charge abstinence program available to LISD
schools and PTAs. We had an opportunity to preview
Ms. Waters 180 Degrees program this summer, and you
will not want to miss her! If possible, we encourage
all middle school and high school PTAs to send your
program chair to the October Council meeting to hear
Ms. Waters speak.
Texas PTA has many wonderful parent programs available
to local PTAs, and we encourage you to partner with
surrounding local units to bring these programs to
your campus. Please visit
http://www.txpta.org/members/Prog_ParentEd.html
to find and schedule a program. Please let me know if
you have questions about programs offered through
Texas PTA. Parent Education is a priority for every
PTA!

Dressed To Learn |
|
We
are entering the 4th year of our successful
partnership between LISD PTAs and Communities in
Schools of North Texas .
The program provides new clothing to
needy children in LISD schools so they come to school
"Dressed to Learn"!
As you plan and prepare for the coming year, please
keep this wonderful program in mind.
How can your PTA help?
1)
Pay the $20 portion of your Council dues in the fall
2)
Plan a drive for new socks/undergarments/khaki pants
or knit polo shirts.
Target the whole school or even your board of
directors. Involve your
Student Council or other clubs or groups on
campus.
3)
Set your budget to include a line item for gift
baskets to 501C3s which
will support CIS and LEF at their galas.
4)
Consider a financial donation to Dressed to Learn so
the right pieces of
clothing can be purchased in the right range
of sizes. - i.e.: top, bottoms,
uniforms.
5)
Hold a penny drive so all students at your school can
help the cause.
6)
Donate a portion of a fundraiser (t-shirts,
school supply packs) to Dressed
to Learn by rounding up the price to the next
whole dollar.
Thank you - every little bit helps!
