Council Regular Meeting Date |

Our next
Regular Meeting Date is
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Councils provide
opportunities for local units to meet and share
knowledge and information, receive training and
coordinate efforts. A council is the key link in
communication among state, area and the local
units. Councils provide support and guidance to the
local units, while serving as a role-model to their
membership.

A
Message From Your Council President |
|

Now that you have
successfully completed your fall membership drive
and mailed your dues to Texas PTA be sure to get
those PTA Membership Cards in the hands of your
members!!
Access to the Members Only
section of the Texas PTA and National PTA websites
is a benefit of being a PTA member. The username
and password located on the back of the card
changed as of October 15th so the new
cards need to be distributed. You can explain how
to access the websites in your newsletter.
Remember - membership is a
year-round effort. Have membership information at
every meeting and event along with welcome packets
in the school office for new families. How about
setting up a table at grandparent's day or a
similar event? Explain the benefits of PTA for
their grandchild's school.
Consider having a
"membership moment" at each regular meeting where
you give a quick update on the number of members,
new members etc. Take time to thank those
volunteers who have been so helpful. We all love
to be acknowledged for our efforts.
Successful membership tips
you would like to share for recruiting and serving
your members? Let me know and we can include in
future editions of The Council Connection.
What a fun Presidents &
Principals Luncheon we had on the 26th.
It was very inspiring to see a room full of PTA
Leaders and LISD Administrators who understand the
impact our relationship has on the children of our
school district. We are very blessed to have a
PTA in every school and strong support from
administration. A special thank you to First
Choice Emergency Room in Flower Mound for
providing drinks, cookies and goodie bags for our
luncheon.
Keep up the great work and
utilize the knowledge and experience of other PTAs
in our district. Don't reinvent the process when
you can borrow - network!! Council is here to
help you succeed and meet your goals. Please
contact us when things are tough and when you have
something to brag about.
Compliment someone today!

November Council Speaker |
|
The speaker for the November General
Council meeting will be Dan Leal, Executive Director
of Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County.
Responding to the "need for a united effort in
combating and treating child abuse in Denton
County," the Children's Advocacy Center opened its
doors in 1997 offering families and young victims a
"child friendly place where child victims could be
interviewed and counseled during investigations of
alleged child abuse." The mission of the Advocacy
Center is to bring justice and healing for abused
children through interagency collaboration with law
enforcement, Child Protective Services, prosecutors,
and therapists. By creating this non-fragmented
approach to child abuse investigation and
prosecution, the Center is able to
"reduce the trauma to child victims and promote
emotional healing through comprehensive counseling
services to victims and non-offending family
members."
"Child abuse has consequences
for the community as well as the victims. A
National Institute of Justice study found that
childhood abuse increased the odds of future
delinquency and adult criminality overall by 40%.
Children who grow up in violent homes are 6 times
more likely to commit suicide, 24 times more likely
to commit sexual assault crimes, 74 times more
likely to commit crimes against persons, and 50
times more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol."

Bowling for Scholars - January 26, 2008 |
|

Start looking for
your bowling shoes & ball. It's time to start
thinking about our annual Bowling for Scholars
Tournament being held Saturday, January 26. This
year marks the fifth annual scholarship fundraiser
for LISD Council of PTAs and we need your help to
keep the successful tradition going!
Each year the Council
awards two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors
at each LISD high school. Without your
support, these scholarships are not possible, so
mark your calendar for January 26, 2008 and
start recruiting your team now - don't forget to
include the kids! (The tournament will again
include a Junior Division for ages 6 to 12.)
Registration fees are
$25 per adult/$20 junior with 4-person teams. This
includes 3 games, shoe rental, and a Bowling for
Scholars t-shirt. Three shifts of games will be
available: 9 - 11 am; 11:30 am - 1:30 pm & 2 - 4
pm.
Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, as well
as other prizes including the school with the most
teams, best team name, worst score etc.
The deadline is December 15th to submit teams.
Remember there is plenty of room for student teams
as well as adult teams. Registration forms will be
available at the November Regular meeting and on the
website. E-mail or call Tracie Owens at bowling4scholars@lisdpta.org
or 972-874-7191 with any questions.

Founder's Day |
Founder's Day is a time to honor the founders of
PTA and take pride in the accomplishments and
renew our commitment to an organization whose
mission is to support and speak on behalf of our
children, to help parents develop the skills
they need to ensure the welfare of our children,
and to encourage involvement of not only
parents, but the community. It is an important
part of every year's program to honor and
recognize those who have volunteered many hours
for the welfare of our children and youth.
The Founder's Day dinner will be held on
Thursday, February 28, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at
the DFW Marriott located at 8440 Freeport
Parkway, Irving.

PTA Focus for
November: Health and Wellness
15 Ideas for Family
Fitness
Kids these days are
spending too much time sitting still, and it is
becoming a major health risk. American children 8
years old and above spend an average of 6.5 hours a
day engaging with media technologies including
watching TV, using the computer, and playing video
games.
Increasing physical
activity improves cardiovascular fitness, helps
prevent obesity, promotes a healthy lifestyle,
boosts self-esteem and confidence, and reduces
stress. You don't need a lot of fancy equipment or
a membership to a health club - there are many ways
to make your family's lifestyle more active:
*At the mall or when
running errands, use the stairs rather than the
elevator.
*Get pedometers and
