A Message From Your Council President |
|
It is so hard to believe that the school year is
coming to a close. Your PTAs have accomplished so
much this year, and it has truly been a joy to watch
you grow and develop as leaders.
I want to take a moment to thank each of you for the
support you have given the Council this year. You
have supported our projects and endeavors, and you
have been a source of encouragement and inspiration.
I would like to also thank Dr. Roy and the LISD
Administration for their continued support of our
projects this year, and for welcoming us and
allowing us to use facilities for our meetings and
trainings. We appreciate being a partner in
education of the children of LISD.
Special thanks to the women and men I serve
alongside with - your 2006-2007 Council Board. They
have been a faithful and dedicated group, going
above and beyond the call of duty time and time
again. I have had the time of my life this year, and
it is because I was blessed to work alongside each
of them.
Congratulations to Kris Vaughn and the newly
installed 2007-2008 Council Officers! I am excited
for them and know they have great things planned for
the PTAs of Lewisville ISD in the coming school
year. Please consider joining the Council board next
year. There are big jobs and little jobs - Standing
Committees and Special Committees. Please give Kris
a call if interested.
Presidents, it has been a pleasure to work with you
this year. If you are moving on to another position
or endeavor, I wish you the very best. Please help
the incoming President have a smooth transition by
turning over all materials to them as soon as you
can. Please pass on the Texas PTA Handbook, the
National PTA Annual Resources, and all other PTA
materials and resources. It is also nice to put all
your files onto a disc for them to help them with
planning for the next school year.
Finally, we hope to see you at Summer Seminar in
Austin. The very best thing you can do for your PTA
is to have trained leaders running it. The training
in Austin is beyond-compare, and it is an excellent
opportunity to preview programs and network with
leaders from around the state. Registration
materials are available at
www.txpta.org. Help
educate your board about the value of training, and
invite them to join you in Austin. We'll see you
there!
It has been a pleasure to serve you this year.

Incoming President - Kris Vaughn |
|
Who am I and why do you need
to know? I'm Kris Vaughn, incoming Council
President for 2007 - 2008. Next year we will
continue the wonderful Council activities and
workshops that are a tradition along with some new
things to help with your local unit
responsibilities. Stay tuned.
I will be a mother of a 4th & 5th
grader at Wellington Elementary next year. My
husband is an Insurance Actuary. I am very blessed
to have my mother living 1 mile from us and retired
from Verizon. Hopefully you will meet her at a
Council meeting next year. I have a management
degree from CentralCollege in Pella, Iowa. What do I
do when not working on PTA duties? read, play my
flute at church, train for the October 7th
Chicago marathon and laugh (mostly about running a
marathon!!).
Hope to see you at Summer Leadership Seminar in
Austin on July 20 - 22.

May Council Speaker |
Our May program was Laura
Clancy, Director of Learning
Beyond The Bell (LBB)
- an LISD after-school program for English language
learners and children at-risk for failure. A video
was show with information about the program and a

service to the Council.
Thank you to everyone who
brought in items off the LBB wish list for the

Dressed To Learn |
Thank you PTAs for a
supportive year! It
started with optional dues and flowed into sock,
undergarment and clothing drives hosted by 6
PTAs. Two PTAs kindly held gently used coat
drives. This spring
25 PTAs offered gift baskets and certificates for
the Communities in Schools gala!
A
special thanks extends to Bridlewood Elementary PTA
under the direction of President, Karen Barger. This
PTA held multiple drive for new items and gift
cards/ the results are outstanding. Nearly $900 in
clothing store gift cards, $100 in cash; 4 dozen new
polos, 4 dozen new khakis and a dozen new
sweatshirts were collected for at risk children in
LISD.

The Power of a Gift Card |
|
Here we are at the end of our
school year. As PTAs you are amending your budget
to Prepare a carryover over figure for next year.
Please keep in mind this golden opportunity to help
Dressed to Learn one last time. Convert unused
dollars into gift cards to local stores such as
Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penny, Sears, and Kohl's. Any
amount - $10, $20 - any quantity will be put to good
use for August and the return to school season.
Donated gift cards are
securely keep in the possession of CIS for the
purchase of new uniform pieces and undergarments in
the exact sizes needed for the students in critical
situations. Unfortunately the number of crisis
situations regarding a clothing need occurs nearly
daily in the life of our at risk LISD schools. Rest
assured only school attire and undergarments are
purchased with donated gift cards. Receipts are
maintained for this special partnetership between
Communities in Schools and LISD PTAs.
Thank you in advance for
considering this opportunity to help! Contact me
directly if you have a donation for Dressed to
Learn.
