A
Message From Your Council President |
|

February was full of fun, friends, fantastic workshops
and Founder's Day! The 99th Texas PTA
Convention was held in The Woodlands and I saw many of
you there. My goal is to have representation from
each local PTA at Summer Leadership Seminar in
Austin. Training expense is a necessary and
appropriate budget item for PTA. These events are
priceless opportunities to network, share ideas and
attend vital trainings to help perform your duties and
grow your PTA.
Elections were held for the 2008 - 2010 Texas PTA
Officers. The results are: Jan Wilkerson, President;
Sharon Goldblatt, 1st VP; Karen Slay, 2nd
VP; Becky Reynolds, Secretary; and Kathy Coffman,
Treasurer. Our newly elected Region V VP is Renee
Walker.
Our annual Founder's Day Dinner was held last week and
if you didn't attend you truly missed a fabulous
event. The fun and smiles began with pre-dinner
entertainment from The Flower Mound HS Fiddlers and
continued through the speaker, Christine Holton Cashen
who had us laughing until our cheeks hurt while
telling us how to "Get What You Want With What You've
Got".
www.adynamicspeaker.com
It was an honor to recognize the Life Member and Texas
Extended Service Award winners. Even though our
district is large in both number of students and
square miles, we come together as one community when
it involves the success of children and their
educational experience. Founder's Day is a time to
celebrate and motivate us to do even more next year.
Thank you to Michelle McDaniel, Founder's Day Chair,
for all her time and effort making this night so
special.
As this school year winds down and elections are being
held, be sure to leave a strong foundation for new
leadership. Continue to focus on the purposes of
PTA: child advocacy, parent involvement and parent
education. Make sure newly elected officers take
advantage of local training at the Area 16 Spring
Conference (see separate article with registration
information) and mark your calendars for Summer
Seminar in Austin July 25-27.
Spring brings many questions about elections,
procedure books, budgets, applying for awards, etc.
Let your council board know if you need assistance. We
are only a phone call or email away. Contact
information at
www.lisdpta.org.
Find time to laugh every day -

March Program - Dignity Memorial's Escape School |
|

Jamie Jewell, with Dignity Memorial's Escape School
program, will be the program speaker for Council's
March Regular Meeting. Each year, more than 58,000
children are abducted by strangers. As funeral care
providers, Dignity Memorial truly understands the
tragedy and pain associated with the loss of a child.
Their goal is to show every family how to be smart,
not scared. To arm children and their parents with
abduction-prevention tips and tactics, Dignity offers
a nationally recognized safety program known as Dignity
Memorial Escape School.
Delivered free of charge by trained Dignity Memorial
employees and offered in an entertaining and
non-threatening manner, the program teaches children
how to differentiate between good and bad strangers,
the common lures abductors use, how to "get away,
right away" and how to find help when needed.

See you there!!
Councils provide opportunities
for local units to meet and share knowledge and
information, receive training and coordinate efforts.
A council is the key link in communication among
state, area and the local units. Councils provide
support and guidance to the local units, while serving
as a role-model to their membership.

Yes, awards of Excellence
means we have 28 entries going to State.
If you have not done so
already, be sure to take a moment to recognize the
children who participated in Reflections at your
campus and encourage them to keep participating in
years to come. Watch the Texas PTA website for
details about next year's Reflections theme "WOW".
Now is not too early for students to start their
entries and then they can refine them over the
summer.
